What we do in a bathroom

Bathroom updates range from a new floor to new fixtures. Ours keep the walls exactly where they are: we don't take on structural wall removal.

Floors are our core work. We take up the old surface, check the base for soft or damp spots, lay a floor suited to a wet room and fit it closely around the tub and vanity.

  • Flooring: tear-out, base inspected and readied, new surface laid
  • Fixture upgrades: agreed with you for your bathroom
  • Edges: baseboard or quarter round, and a threshold piece at the doorway

Showers, walls and plumbing vary from one bathroom to the next. Describe yours when you call, and we'll spell out what we cover.

Floors that suit a bathroom

Bathrooms get splashed daily, and puddles beside a tub or around a toilet find any open seam. Vinyl plank with a waterproof core is popular here because the planks won't swell when soaked. Laminate, built on fiberboard, belongs in drier spaces.

Along the tub apron and at the threshold, the perimeter is sealed and trimmed so it looks deliberate and gives splashes fewer ways underneath.

What's under an old bathroom floor

Years of slow drips around a toilet or tub can leave spongy spots in plywood or stains on concrete. With the old surface up, we inspect the base and tell you what turned up before anything new is laid. Tear-out and prep follow the same method as our floor removal and subfloor preparation work.

Primary baths, guest baths and powder rooms

A powder room is tiny, yet every cut counts: the surface wraps a pedestal sink or vanity and a toilet within a few square feet. Guest baths often get a quick facelift before relatives visit or a house goes on the market. Primary suites are where people usually want more, such as the new floor continuing from the bedroom.

Steam, humidity and ventilation

Florida bathrooms face steam from daily showers on top of muggy outdoor air. A working exhaust fan, run for several minutes after bathing, keeps dampness from settling into seams and baseboards. Beside a tub, PVC quarter round or baseboard is a sensible pick, since it won't swell if splashed.

Small details count in a small room: the door may need trimming at the bottom so it clears the new surface, and the threshold piece is sized to the height change into the hallway or bedroom.

Updates that keep the footprint

Enlarging a bathroom by moving or demolishing a load-bearing wall is structural work, and it's outside what we do. A bathroom update with us keeps the room's size and shape and changes the floor and fixtures inside it.

Bathroom remodeling questions

What does a bathroom remodel with KPC include?

New flooring and fixture upgrades are the core, inside the existing walls. Showers, walls, plumbing and electrical vary by bathroom, so describe yours when you call; we'll confirm which parts we take on before anything is scheduled.

Can you make my bathroom bigger by moving a wall?

We don't take on structural wall removal. A bathroom update with us keeps the footprint and updates what's inside it.

Is vinyl plank a good choice for a bathroom floor?

Often, yes. Many rigid-core planks have a waterproof core, so splashes and wet towels won't swell them. Water that seeps beneath at the tub edge can still linger, which is why the perimeter gets careful sealing. See vinyl plank installation.

Can laminate go in a bathroom?

We usually steer people away from it. Its fiberboard core can swell when puddles reach the seams. See laminate flooring for rooms where it shines.

What happens at the tub and the toilet?

The new surface is scribed tight to the tub and sealed along that line. How the toilet and vanity are handled during the flooring work is part of the scope we settle with you.

What if the subfloor is soft under my old bathroom floor?

Slow drips over the years can soften plywood or stain a slab. We inspect once the old surface is up, show you what turned up and explain the options before continuing. If what you need is a repair rather than a remodel, mention it on the phone.

Can the ceramic in my bathroom be covered instead of torn out?

Sometimes. Firm, flat ceramic can take a skin coat with vinyl plank on top. In a bathroom, the added height at the door and around the toilet is checked first. See vinyl plank over tile.

Will I have a working bathroom during the remodel?

The bathroom being updated is out of service for parts of the work. If it's the only one in the house, flag it early so the sequence accounts for it.

We only want the floor replaced. Is that a job you take?

Of course. Replacing only the bathroom floor is ordinary flooring work for us: we take up what's there, ready the base and lay the new surface, then trim the edges.

What decides the cost of a bathroom project?

Square footage, what has to be torn out, what turns up underneath and which fixtures you'd like upgraded. We quote once we've seen the room.
